Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Own For 2018

Recently, analysts at the Bank of Nova Scotia released a note on Baytex Energy Corp. (BTE) discussing their recent Q2 production figures pre-release, and the bank put a CAD$7.75 price target on Baytex. This represents an 158% return from current price levels.

While I definitely view Scotiabanks projection as optimistic, my own more conservative analysis for 2018 reveals that with a slightly improved and stabilized oil price, and given Baytexs exceptional leverage to the price of oil, an 100% rally is reasonable from a valuation and historical price behavior standpoint. In fact, it isnt unprecedented between January 11th 2016 and June 7th 2016, Baytex rallied nearly 400% compared to a 60% rally in WTI. Conversely, the stock is down nearly 60% year-to-date compared to 13% for WTI. Over the past 6 months, Baytex is the 7th worst performer out of 41 Canadian energy names.

Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Own For 2018: NEW GOLD INC.(NGD)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market lost ground on Monday, sending major market benchmarks lower by more than half a percentage point. The Dow lost its grip on the 20,000 mark in the wake of concerns about economic growth and new U.S. immigration policy, and some believe that the broader geopolitical climate could have a negative impact on global commerce that in turn could start affecting multinational corporations’ business prospects. In addition, bad news from some individual companies weighed on the markets, and Transocean (NYSE:RIG), Rite Aid (NYSE:RAD), and New Gold (NYSEMKT:NGD) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Own For 2018: Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.(CMG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Earlier today, we noted that Maxim’sStephen Anderson had warned that shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) had already priced in a lot of good earnings news. Standpoint Research’s Ronnie Moas has taken that a step further by cutting Chipotle to Sell.

  • [By Seth McNew]

Chipotle Mexican Grill(NYSE:CMG) looks to be in recovery mode after a very rough year and a half. Things seem to be turning around, with traffic and sales picking back up as Chipotle continues to drive the message that its food is “as real as it gets.” One area that could help to amplify its growth is if Chipotle’s new digital strategy really starts to take off this year.

Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Own For 2018: Natural Gas(NG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

When an investor thinks of Canadian gold mining stocks, NovaGold Resources Inc. (USA) (NYSEMKT:NG) and Yamana Gold Inc. (USA) (NYSE:AUY) are often the first names to come to mind. And well they should. Yamana Gold is a $2.5 billion giant, and NovaGold Resources seems to have been around forever.

Those two icons aren’t the only way to tap into Canada’s sizeable gold mining industry though. There’s a small, up-and-coming player called Taranis Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:TNREF, TSX:TRO) that could end up becoming another key fixture of the country’s mining landscape.

Taranis develops mineral deposits into mine-ready projects. Its primary project right now — and it’s enough to keep the company plenty busy for the next several years — is the Thor property located near Trout Lake, British Columbia. NI 43-101 resource reports (indicated and inferred)suggest Thor contains 6.9 million ounces of silver, 35,000 ounces gold, 57 million pounds of lead, 79.4 million pounds of zinc and 3.3 Million pounds of copper (roughly a 14 million ounce silver equivalent (“AgEq”) deposit*) laying in wait in a way that lends itself to the establishment of a low-cost, open pit mining operation. That’s roughly $300 million worth of marketable metals, and the estimates have been steadily getting bigger as Tanaris does more survey work.

And 2017 could be a real breakout year for Taranis, as a lot of the work that’s been done to date starts to mean something. It’s got big exploration plans for this year… this spring/summer to be exact.

The Phase 1 program was completed in September of last year, setting the stage for a more defined and much bigger Phase 2 definition-drilling within the next several weeks. This Phase 2 definition drilling slated for the middle of this year will drill down to between 6000 m and 10,000 m.

These so-called first generation target areas are generally well understood areas based on sound geological information includ

Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Own For 2018: Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc(VRX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

“I am working on a new system where there will be competition in the drug industry,” he said shortly before 9:00 a.m. EST. Within an hour, shares of several Big Pharma companies, including Mylan (MYL) , Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) and Allergan (AGN) , had sunk by several percentage points.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. (NYSE: VRX) dropped about 6.4% Wednesday to post a new 52-week low of $9.52 after closing Tuesday at $10.17. The stock’s 52-week high is $38.50. Volume of about 35 million shares was nearly double the daily average of around 19 million. The company is reportedly having trouble selling one of its division for what it deems an acceptable price.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We noted earlier that Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (VRX) has popped today after selling assets for more than $2 billion, beginning what many expect to be just the first round of such sales. BMO’s Gary Nachman notes that Valeant had received “a solid price” for its assets. He explains:

The first transaction is the sale of Dendreon (Provenge) to Sanpower Group for $820mn in cash. Provenge is a treatment for prostate cancer and is not core to Valeant; thus, we are not surprised by this asset sale. We estimate Provenge sales of $306mn for 2016, which translates to a multiple of ~2.7x.Valeant has been struggling to accelerate Provenge since it acquired the product, and given that the company does not have a real oncology presence we think this deal makes a lot of sense.

The second transaction is the sale of CeraVe, AcneFree and AMBI to L’Oreal for $1.3bn in cash. These products are OTC skincare brands that we believe are core to Valeant’s dermatology/OTC business; thus, this deal is more surprising to us. However, with annual combined sales for the three products of $168mn, that translates to a multiple of ~7.7x. We think that is a good price and demonstrates Valeant’s willingness to part with some core assets if the valuation makes sense. We view that as a smart business decision given the urgency forValeant to pay down its significant $30bn debt level more aggressively…

There is still more to go with asset sales, but we view this as a good start for Valeant.

Shares of Valeant Pharmaceuticals International have gained 5.5% to $16.19 at 2:02 p.m. today. That’s a solid gain, but less thanthe 12% rise in pre-open trading, and the 8.8% rise at 10:27 a.m.

Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Own For 2018: Transcananda Pipelines Ltd.(TRP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Energy infrastructure companies ONEOK (NYSE:OKE) and TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) are both emerging from the energy market downturn as stronger entities. Each made smart acquisitions, with TransCanada buying U.S. gas pipeline company Columbia Pipeline Group, while ONEOK is in the process of gobbling up its MLP,ONEOK Partners (NYSE:OKS). While these deals enhanced the growth profiles of both companies, TransCanada still stands out as the better buy for long-term income investors. Here’s why.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

That includes pipeline companies like Kinder Morgan Inc. (NYSE: KMI), which already operates a pipeline transporting natural gas from Texas into Mexico, and master limited partnerships (MLPs) Energy Transfer Partners L.P. (NYSE: ETP) and TransCanada Corp. (NYSE: TRP), the company that has (so far) failed to get U.S. approval for its Keystone Pipeline expansion from Canada’s oil sands across the U.S. border.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

After a series of setbacks in its attempts to build new oil pipelines, Canadian pipeline giant TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) completed a transformation transaction to acquire U.S. natural gas pipeline company Columbia Pipeline Group for $13 billion, which includes the assumption of debt. The key to that deal was that it increased the combined company’s near-term project pipeline to 23 billion Canadian dollars, which supports TransCanada’s ability to increase its dividend by 8% to 10% annually through 2020. After completing that deal, TransCanada made a bid to acquire all of the outstanding units that it did not own of affiliated MLP Columbia Pipeline Partners (NYSE:CPPL) in a transaction valued at $915 million. These acquisitions solidified TransCanada’s natural gas pipeline growth ambitions, enabling it to diversify away from oil pipelines.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

In a number of articles recently, following the US recent revival and potential approval of the previously blocked Keystone XL pipeline, a number of estimates have been provided suggesting a pending boom for the US steel industry is on the horizon (and US steel stocks have reacted in kind). In fact, this optimism, we believe, peaked today when a report from one of our competitors was published claiming that, the keystone XL pipeline could increase line pipe demand by 14.7% for 2 years. The problem here, we believe, rests with the facts that: (a) TransCanada (TRP) has already taken, and paid for, the steel to build the Keystone XL pipeline (the steel currently sits in storage facilities in both Regina, Canada and Arkansas, United States), (b) neither US Steel (X; SELL), AK Steel, Steel Dynamics, or Nucor have the ability to make the specialized steel required for the miles of pipe associated with this project, to include both the thickness and pressure requirements , according to this article from Reuters, and (c) assuming some of the pipe does need replacement, this would likely come from international steel makers who are capable of producing the specialized steel (again, as highlighted in this Reuters article).

  • [By WWW.KIPLINGER.COM]

Energy stocks were driven by a hefty dose of M&A during the third quarter. And that will drive returns for TransCanada Corporation (TRP) during the next one.

Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Own For 2018: Wells Fargo & Company(WFC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Keith Fitz-Gerald]

First, the Dow dropped below 19,800 points with two stocks – The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:GS) and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) – experiencing a $3.26 billion selloff alone. Big banking stocks including Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) and JPMorgan Chase and Co. (NYSE:JPM) sold off far more severely than the S&P 500 itself. Tech stocks were more or less unscathed, with the exception of Alphabet Inc. (NasdaqGS:GOOG), which received a 2.55% buzzcut of $26 per share.

What’s the deal? The answer is that not all of the bank stocks selected by Warren Buffett for Berkshire Hathaway’s portfolio performed equally well this year. One in particular dragged down its returns: Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC).

So we asked three of our contributors to highlight a stock they see as a real underdog in the market today and why investors should be watching this stock. Here’s a quick look into why they picked banker Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC), railcar manufacturer Greenbrier Companies (NYSE:GBX) , and egg wholesaler Cal-Maine Foods (NASDAQ:CALM)

Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC) reported fiscal 2017 first-quarter results before markets opened Thursday. The banking giant posted diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.00 on revenue of $22 billion. In the same period a year ago, Wells Fargo reported EPS of $0.99 on revenue of $21.58 billion. Net income rose from $5.27 billion a year ago to $5.46 billion in the quarter. First-quarter results also compare to the consensus estimates for EPS of $0.97 on revenue of $22.31 billion.

Who is “the market” and how does it “want” to go down? Where’s the commandment that says stocks have to go lower? Who decides that today people who own stocks are by and large going to lose money? And why, of all things, does the market not want to go higher? Didn’t the CEO of the biggest bank, JPMorgan (JPM) , say things are great? Didn’t Wells Fargo (WFC) , after all of that scandal, still show some growth, a sign that it is putting the rough patch behind it? Didn’t Citigroup (C) have its best quarter in years? Wasn’t PNC Financial (PNC) even better, clear triumphs on every single line item? The word “perfect” comes to mind, as in Perfect National Corp. (Wells Fargo and Citigroup are part of TheStreet’s Action Alerts PLUS portfolio.)

The oilfield services company said it earned 63 cents a share (a figure that excludes $13 million in net unfavorable items), well ahead of the nickel a share in earnings analysts expected. Revenue fell 47.4% year over year to $974 million, also above the $806 million consensus estimate. Transocean said its contract backlog was $11.3 billion as of its February fleet status report. Raymond Jamess Praveen Narra and J. Marshall Adkins reiterated an Underperform rating on the stock following the report. They praised the companys ongoing cost controls and strong revenue efficiency, which they expect to continue. But still arent ready to recommend the stock amid a difficult macro backdrop. More detail from their note:

Transocean continued to minimize costs and maximize efficiency amid a challenging offshore environment, reporting 4Q16 adjusted EBITDA of $414 million, higher than our estimate of $363 million and consensus of $394 million. The beat was driven by lower than expected costs of $344 million (adjusting for favorable litigation), which came in ~12% lower than our estimate of $385 million and guidance of guidance of $375-385 million. Total revenue efficiency came in at 100.3%, as it was boosted by bonus incentives and possibly effective results from the new contracting model, particularly in the high-spec jackup market. The beat to our estimates was also driven by higher than anticipated revenues, which came in at $805 million, above our estimate of $788 million, but below the consensus estimate of $812 million. We note, our adjusted revenue excludes $169 million in early termination fees during the quarter.

Top 10 Oil Stocks To Invest In 2018: Range Resources Corporation(RRC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

Talk about a Barron’s bounce!Range Resources (RRC) has soared to the top of the S&P 500 today after Barron’s touted it in the pages of the magazine this weekend.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

    Range Resources gained 4.1% to $28.47, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.3% to2,375.31.

Barron’s Andrew Bary called Range Resources “an unappreciated energy play.” He explains why:

With major market indexes at record highs, natural-gas stocks are among the few depressed industry groups. Blame a warm winter and weakening gas prices.

Range Resources (ticker: RRC), a leading U.S. gas producer, looks undervalued. Its shares, at $27, are down 20% this year and are much below their 52-week high of $47, set last June. Range drilled the first well in the now-prolific Marcellus region of Pennsylvania more than a decade ago and amassed one of its largest land positions there610,000 acres. Its $4.2 billion purchase of Memorial Resource Development last September gave it access to what the company views as a prolific and underappreciated gas region: northern Louisiana

Range Resources’ market capitalization rose to $7 billion today from $6.8 billion on Friday. It reported net income of $521 million on sales of $1.4 billion in 2016.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Wednesday was Range Resources Corp. (NYSE: RRC) which traded downabout 12% at $17.90. The stocks 52-week range is $17.68 to $43.60. Volume was about 25 million versus the daily average of 5.6 million shares.

According to a report by PLS, producers spent more than $23 billion locking up prime positions in the Permian Basin and another $7 billion on Mid-Continent acreage acquisitions. However, most of those were smaller deals, with the top transaction weighing in at $2.5 billion. Meanwhile, the Ark-La-Tex region near the Gulf Coast quietly tied for the second hottest M&A geography in the country, largely because of Range Resources (NYSE:RRC) acquisition of Memorial Resource Development. Range Resources paid $4.2 billion, which includes the assumption of debt, to gain a leading position in the Lower Cotton Valley region of Northern Louisiana. Not only is the play saturated with natural gas, but it’s also near the Gulf Coast, which is expected to see increased demand from new petrochemical and industrial complexes as well as LNG export facilities. In other words, Range Resources made a big bet on higher gas prices along the Gulf Coast.

Range Resources Corp. (NYSE: RRC) dropped about 12.8% Wednesday to register a new 52-week low of $17.71 after closing at $20.30 on Tuesday. The 52-week high is $43.60. Volume was nearly 20 million, nearly 4 times the daily average. The natural gas producer missed estimates this morning and revised its growth projections downward. It was one of several energy companies that took some price target cuts from analysts.

Range Resources Corp. (NYSE: RRC) is rated Buy with a lowered price target of $43. The 2017 EPS estimate has been lowered from $0.85 to $0.68, and the 2018 estimate waslowered from $1.60 to $1.52. Advisors’ Opinion:

Following a series of M&A announcements in the oilfield-services sector since the onset of the oil market downturn, French oil-field service company Technip and U.S. oilfield equipment company FMC Technologies (NYSE:FTI) hooked up in an all-stock deal valuing the combined company at $13 billion. Shareholders of each company will own 50% of the combined entity, to be named TechnipFMC, which implies a roughly $6.5 billion acquisition valuation for each entity. The transaction, which should close early next year, will “combine Technip’s innovative systems and solutions, state-of-the-art assets, engineering strengths, and project management capabilities with FMC Technologies’ leading technology, manufacturing, and service capabilities.” Further, it should save $400 million in annual costs by 2019. Moreover, it will enable the combined company to compete better against larger oil-field service rivals Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI), Halliburton (NYSE:HAL), and Schlumberger (NYSE:SL B), which have all gained strength during the downturn either through M&A activities or cost savings initiatives.

Plus, the multitude of operating regions means some could be profitable, covering for when others are not.

Now, that’s the one bank we have a reluctance to do so–even though we are–and the rest are trading above book. Bank of America is now $3 above tangible book, after spending years in the wilderness. What’s the deal? The answer is that not all of the bank stocks selected by Warren Buffett for Berkshire Hathaway’s portfolio performed equally well this year. One in particular dragged down its returns: Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC).

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

Wells Fargo (WFC) is lower Monday, after the board of directors released the results of its internal investigation of the firms sales practices scandal.

The company is clawing back some $75 million in pay from former Chief Executive JohnStumpfand former retailbankleaderCarrie Tolstedt, which the bank, in its 113-page report, holds largely responsible for the problems.

The Wall Street Journal has more details on Wells Fargos conclusions:

The boards results cap a six-monthindependent investigation that has not only rocked the countrys third-largest bank by assets but also the broader banking industry, with dozens of firms examining their own sales practices at the behest of regulators.

Many directors on the San Francisco banks board now face their own scrutiny. Last week, proxy advisory firmInstitutional Shareholder Services Inc. suggested Wells Fargo investorsvote against 12 of the banks 15 directorsat the firms annual meeting April 25.The bank also continues to face federal and state investigations about its sales practices.

A couple of analysts are weighing in on the stock today. Evercore ISIs John Pancari reiterated an Outperform rating and $64 price target on the stock:

We reiterate our constructive thesis onWFCfrom a long term perspective as we expect abating headline risk (in part due to the conclusion of this investigation), still-intact above-peer ROE (despite our modeled expectation for a $0.25 per share go-fwd annual impact from the sales practice issue), and solid competitive position to drive a return of the stock’s premium valuation over time. Supply could come from any number of industry players, including Winnebago Industries, Inc. (NYSE: WGO), Thor Industries, Inc. (NYSE: THO), Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) and Camping World Holdings Inc (NYSE: CWH). However, whether it comes from existing inventory and whether suppliers can meet the demand are yet to be seen.

Finally, shares of Winnebago Industries dropped 6%. The maker of recreational vehicles has been under pressure ever since rival Thor Industries (NYSE:THO) reported its most recent quarterly results earlier this week, and Thor’s story led shareholders to sell off that stock. Yet although Winnebago is in the same business as Thor, some investors think that it could succeed where Thor failed, especially because the Winnebago brand name is much more valuable and has greater customer recognition that many of its competitors’ offerings. Winnebago will have its own chance to report its financial results later this month, and although many investors seem to be betting against the RV maker, others believe that Winnebago could easily make its competitive advantage against Thor and other manufacturers clear with a solid performance this quarter.

Thor Industries (THO) expects 2017 to be one of the strongest years for the RV industry since the 1970s.

The prospect of higher gasoline prices seems unlikely to derail the RV rebound, given that growth is being driven by smaller and more fuel-efficient motorized RVs and towable trailers.

Oil prices haven’t gotten off to the fast start many expected, falling around 6% on average during the first quarter of the year. That slump came despite OPEC’s best efforts since producing nations have achieved fairly good compliance on their planned output cuts. That said, despite the lackluster oil market, we still see some interestingopportunities in the oil market. Three stocks we really like right now are DistributionNOW(NYSE:DNOW),Phillips 66(NYSE:PSX), andConocoPhillips(NYSE:COP), which all should do well in the current oil market.

Smaller brethren ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) reported an adjusted loss of $0.14 per share compared to the break-even result the Street was forecasting. However, the loss narrowed notably from the $0.95 per share loss reported a year ago.

Other stocks that were net sold include ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) and Kinder Morgan Inc (NYSE: KMI). Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) was also sold by clients after the electric vehicle maker saw its stock hit a new all-time high in the middle of the month.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised he would implement massive changes to Canada marijuana laws. And when he does, it will create a new and booming economy.

If Canada places a “sin tax” of 50% on recreational marijuana sales, the country could make $5 billion annually, according to a CIBC World Markets report.

Currently, only medical marijuana is legal in Canada.

But an overwhelming amount of Canadians support legalizing recreational marijuana…

According to a poll conducted in the summer of 2016, 43% of the 1,000 Canadians surveyed supported legalizing recreational marijuana. Also, 26% of those surveyed somewhat supported legalizing recreational marijuana.

Only 17% were opposed, and 9% were somewhat opposed.

Top Canadian Stocks To Own Right Now: Wells Fargo & Company(WFC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Bank stocks have had quite a run since Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential election victory–such a run, in fact that Baird’s David George and team worry that most of the benefits of “potential improvement in macro growth, regulatory relief, and corporate tax reform” seem priced into their stocks. They recommend investors “selectively reduce bank exposure” but still like Wells Fargo (WFC), which they call a “top buy idea.” They explain why:

It looks like investors are hating the company, too. Shares of CMG are down 23% year to date (YTD).

Big banks like JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Wells Fargo (WFC), and Bank of America (BAC) have surged more than 20% during the past three months–causing many investors to doubt the possibility for further gains. I’m note one of them–after my disastrous financials call last year, I’m bullish on them in 2017–and neither is Morgan Stanley’s Betsy Graseck, who remains Overweight the big banks, despite their big gains. She explains why:

3M Company (NYSE: MMM) traded up 0.75% at $191.74. The stock’s 52-week range is $163.05 to $192.14, and the high was posted this afternoon. Volume was about 40% above the daily average of around 1.8 million shares. The company announced a $2 billion acquisition of the personal-safety unit of Johnson Controls.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

We saw this pattern with 3M (MMM) , one of my favorite stocks, which got crushed, falling from $177 to $173 because of what the headline writers called a weak consumer-products division. Sure, you can pull a line and see an unexpected decline. But declines do not necessarily mean weakness, which, to me, connotes a failure to have the right product and flagging sales. If you go listen to the conference call, you discover that the weakness had to do with a particularly retailer’s troubles. Sure, you could argue, why do we trust this company? I come back and say, you trust them because CEO Inge Thulin has been money in the bank for years and there’s no reason not to trust him.

  • [By Demitrios Kalogeropoulos]

Investors looking for brighter prospects should consider two other blue-chip giants, 3M (NYSE:MMM) and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ). Both are exposed to the consumer goods industry, but also get significant chunks of sales and profits from faster-growing segments.

Recreational vehicles have hit a stretch of popularity that the industry hasn’t seen since the 1970s, and Thor Industries (NYSE:THO) has found itself in the right place at the right time. The RV specialist has made every effort it can to boost its growth to take advantage of favorable conditions, both by ramping up its existing internal operations and by looking for strategic combinations like its recent acquisition of industry peer Jayco. Coming into Monday’s fiscal second-quarter financial report, Thor investors were looking for very strong growth, and even though the company largely delivered on that front, some concerns about the pace of further gains throughout the rest of the fiscal year weighed on Thor stock after the report.
