Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX) is one of those stocks that you wish you bought last year every year. It’s not an explosive growth tech or pharma story- everyone knows the downsides of those. Rather, its a stock that steadily rises, year after year, with rising earnings and dividends, and management who seemingly know what they are doing to make this happen. In other words, real value creation. It sounds so simple, and yet it is so rare in the market. Many household name blue-chips have become such crowded trades that they now have to resort to financial engineering in the form of buybacks to keep the party going. Paychex, at just under $21B market cap, remains small enough not to be swept up with the P&Gs and Colgate-Palmolives of this world.

On a five year basis, this stock has outperformed the SPY by 42% with less volatility, currently sporting a beta of 0.82. Are we too late to the party?

Advisors’ Opinion:

I expect the Brookfield Group of Companies, which is composed of no fewer than 15 publicly traded entities, to be very active acquisitive in the near-term future. Here I focus my attention on three members of the Brookfield Group that are going to be the most active with M&A. While Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) will concentrate its M&A efforts into all geographies and all asset classes, Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners (BEP) and Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (BIP) will concentrate on their respective industries. Let’s see whether you should go long on any of this separate -although related – entities.

    Good Operational Performance

Brookfield Asset Management, held by Lou Simpson and Ron Baron, counts with a liquidity position of more than $5 billion at the parent and principal subsidiaries along with nearly $10 billion drawable private fund commitments. More importantly, the company has expressed its interest into using this liquidity to make acq uisitions. Management clearly stated in its letter to shareholders:

Since August 2010, the Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES:^DJI) have risen from below 10,000 to within a fraction of a point of 20,000. Doubling in just over six years is an impressive feat, especially given that the Dow also pays a respectable dividend yield of more than 2% on top of its rise. Yet although all 30 stocks that are currently in the Dow have risen over that period, some haven’t done nearly as well as the overall average. In particular, Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT), IBM (NYSE:IBM), and Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) have underperformed the Dow since 2010. Let’s look more closely at these stocks and whether they can start pulling more of their weight in 2017 and beyond.

^DJI data by YCharts

How a big-box giant lagged behind the Dow

Wal-Mart hasn’t exactly done badly over the past six years, rising 57%. Yet the retail giant has seen several big moves in both directions over that timeframe, and the state of its once-commanding big-box business is far from the colossus that long-term investors became familiar with throughout most of its history.

us stock exchange: FORM Holdings (FH)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew Briar]

Looking for a quick, money-making trading idea? Put FORM Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ:FH) on your watchlist, if not yet in your portfolio. FH shares are knocking on the door of a breakout move, and one more nudge could do the trick.

There are a couple of factors in play here. One of the is the converging wedge pattern that’s developed after the October-December finally stabilized. The upper boundary of that wedge at $2.40 has been tested several times since late last year, but FORM Holdings could never get past the hurdle. At the same time, several key moving average lines seem to be acting as support — even if unevenly — keeping FH positioned well for a breakout effort.
