Top Performing Stocks To Buy For 2017

Wynn Resorts (WYNN) soared nearly to the top of the S&P 500 today after Morgan Stanley argued that the casino stock had the potential to double.

Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Wynn Resortsgained 4.8% to $104.30 today, while the S&P 500 finished little changed at2,373.47. At 2:45, Wynn was easily the top performing stock in the S&P 500, only to be surpassed by Citrix’s (CTXS) late day surge.

Morgan Stanley’s Thomas Allen and team explain how Wynn could double:

Our AlphaWise work on Google search data and separate analyses of market trends suggest the Street is too low on WYNN’s Macau market share gains. Our base case implies 20% upside; bull case, the stock could double.

Consensus forecasts WYNN to essentially not grow Macau market share over 4Q16, despite the Aug ’16 opening of Wynn Palace (which increased WYNN’s room capacity by 170%) and the general view that the benefit from the property has been disappointing so far. We see upside to WYNN’s market share supported by (1) analysis of Google search trends, (2) current market dynamics and WYNN actions, and (3) the performance of WYNNs first Macau property

Advisors’ Opinion:

Nothing guts a drug stock like bad clinical trial data. Shares of Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical (RARE) fell as much as 10% after a seizure medication failed in a phase II study.

Trading at a recent $72.22, the shares were down 7.7% after earlier falling as much as 10% to $70.51

The seizure drug UX007 was tested as a treatment for glucose transporter type-1 deficiency syndromeor Glut1 DSamong a small group of patients. Data released Wednesday showed that it only cut the rate of seizures in the drug arm by 13.4% compared to the placebo arm, falling short of statistical significance.

Investigators, though, teased out a clinically — though not statistically — significant benefit for patients experiencing what are called absence seizures. Ultragenyx now intends to focus on that in a Phase III pivotal trial.

Leerik analyst Joseph Schwartz called the selloff a buying opportunity.

We had been cautious on this asset (and its two programs – G1DS and long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorder/LC-FAOD; LINK) – but believe the selling pressure after mkt. presents a buying opportunity ahead of a more de-risked X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) Ph.3 data in 1H17.

Cowen analyst Eric Schmidt remained convinced of RAREs long-term prospects thanks to a diversified orphan disease pipeline. And analysts at Credit Suisse see more catalysts ahead in 2017.

We are buyers on a pullback and we like RAREs setup for the remainder of 2017…Remaining 2017 catalysts keep us buyers on a pullback: We see Q2:17 KRN23 ph3 adult XLH data, H1:17 rhGUS FDA/EMA submission, potential KRN23 CHMP decision in mid-17 (based on late-2016 EMA submission/validation), H2:17 Ace-ER ph3 GNEM data, and potential KRN23 FDA submission in late-17/early-18 as upcoming catalysts worth owning for.

Theres the retirement that looks like the commercials: biking, travel, enjoying the family.

And then theres the one where you cant get up the stairs anymore.

Most of us happily plan for the first, when our health is good and energy high. The second can be hard to contemplate, when health falters and medical crises can change lives in an instant.

Yet a focus on just the active part of retirement can shortchange your quality of life once you begin to decline, which is why financial advisors suggest you also look at how youll live in the later phase. Heres what you should consider for that second stage.

good stocks to invest in today: Kinder Morgan, Inc.(KMI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By WWW.KIPLINGER.COM]

Kinder Morgan Inc. (KMI) has 84,000 miles of pipeline under its midstream umbrella.

    Thats a big number.

Kinder Morgan also boasts 180 terminals, fractionation and processing facilities, coal depots, tankers and other pieces of infrastructure. Wrap it all together, and you literally have the largest midstream firm in North America.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Kinder Morgan (KMI) fell 2.8% to $36.01 today, one day after Hedgeye released its report on the company.

PVH (PVH) dropped 1.5% to $22.80, a day after falling 5.6% on disappointing earnings, after a Citigroup analyst said its no longer one of her top picks.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

That includes pipeline companies like Kinder Morgan Inc. (NYSE: KMI), which already operates a pipeline transporting natural gas from Texas into Mexico, and master limited partnerships (MLPs) Energy Transfer Partners L.P. (NYSE: ETP) and TransCanada Corp. (NYSE: TRP), the company that has (so far) failed to get U.S. approval for its Keystone Pipeline expansion from Canada’s oil sands across the U.S. border.

  • [By Dimitra DeFotis]

In a nutshell: Hedgeye says investors should worry more about Kinder’s pipeline maintenance and spending therein. And it says Kinder’s exploration and production business, while small, is NOT a pipeline enterprise and valuation should reflect that. Moreover, Hedgeye says it thinks Kinder Morgans strategy is to “starve its pipelines and related infrastructure of routine maintenance spending” so that it can maximize distributable cash flow and payments to the general partner, Kinder Morgan(KMI). As a structure,MLPs pay out most of their cash flow as tax-deferred distributions to investors in their “units,” as shares are called.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One energy player that insiders are buying up a huge amount of stock in here is Kinder Morgan (KMI), which owns interests in an energy transportation and storage company. Insiders are buying this stock into modest strength, since shares are up 2.4% so far in 2013.

Kinder Morgan has a market cap of $37.5 billion and an enterprise value of $71 billion. This stock trades at a premium valuation, with a trailing price-to-earnings of 37.94 and a forward price-to-earnings of 23.03. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 153.1%, and for next year it’s pegged at 26.6%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $1.02 billion and its total debt is a whopping $35.60 billion. This stock currently sports a dividend yield of 4.2%

The CEO and chairman of the board just bought 500,000 shares, or about $17.86 million worth of stock, at $35.74 a share.

From a technical perspective, KMI is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock has been downtrending for the last two months, with shares moving lower from its July high of $40.03 a share to its recent low of $34.82 a share. During that downtrend, shares of KMI have been making mostly lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action.

If you’re bullish on KMI, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above its 200-day at $36.97, and then once takes out some near-term overhead resistance levels at 50-day at $37.80 a share to more resistance at $38.29 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 4.91 million shares. If we get that move soon, then KMI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $40.03 to $41.06 a share.

    NRG Energygained 4.5% to $12.85 today, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.2% to 2,262.53.

In a note released on Dec. 15, Morgan Stanley’sStephen Byrd and team summarized the reasoning behind their overweight rating on NRG:

NRG Energy (NRG, Overweight, $21 PT) FCF/Equity yield of ~35% and balanced upside from diversified market exposure, higher PJM capacity prices, fleet optimization, and debt reduction. NRG’s generation plus retail matching strategy is an underappreciated source of value, and provides stable cash flow despite current depressed power prices in Texas.

NRG Energy’s market capitalization rose to $4.1 billion today from $3.8 billion yesterday. It reported a net loss of $6.4 billion on sales of $15 billion in 2015.

Shares of NRG Energy gained 9% to $11.04 today, while the S&P 500 dipped 0.2% to 2,085.18.

NRG Energy reported a profit of $1.27 a share, easily topping forecasts for 93 cents a share. And while revenue of $3.95 billion fell short of the $4.20 consensus, it raised its 2016 EBITDA guidance to a range of $3.25 billion to $3.35 billion from a range of $3 billion to $3.2 billion. While that might not seem like the kind of report to warrant a 9% gain, NRG had dropped 28% during the past three months of trading.

NRG Energy’s market capitalization rose to $3.5 billion today from $3.2 billion yesterday.

Barron’s Lawrence Strauss highlighted NRG Energy in a column about the best utility-sector yield plays in April.

companies to invest in: MGM Resorts International(MGM)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We’ve noted before that for all the attention Macau gets, the real action for casinos these days is in Las Vegas. In a report issued today, Gabelli’s Adam Trivison touts the importance of Nevada for Boyd Gaming (BYD) and MGM Resorts International (MGM), which have large Nevada footprints, and for Wynn Resorts (WYNN) and Las Vegas Sands (LVS), which don’t:

  • [By Monica Wolfe]

    MGM Resorts International (MGM)

Paulsons fifth largest position is in MGM Resorts International. The guru holds on to 34 million shares of the companys stock, representing 3.5% of his total portfolio and 6.94% of the companys shares outstanding.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Wynn wasn’t the only Macau casino operator that took it on the chin today. Las Vegas Sands (LVS) tumbled 13% to $54.67, while Melco Crown Entertainment (MPEL) plunged 14% to $16.87, and MGM Resorts International (MGM) dropped 4.3% to $28.65.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Gabelli Research’s Adam Trivison calls MGM Resorts International’s (MGM) purchase of Boyd Gaming’s (BYD) half of the Borgata in Atlantic City “well played.” He explains why:

On May 31, 2016, MGM Resorts (MGM) agreed to purchase Boyd Gamings 50% stake in Borgata for $600 million of cash with MGM assuming Borgatas $600 million of debt, which implies an enterprise value of 9.0x our 2016 EBITDA estimate. Subsequently, MGM Growth Properties (MGP) agreed to purchase Borgatas real estate (i.e. $100 million of annual rent payments) for $1,175 million. We think that the outcome is better for all three parties, made possible by
MGPs low cost of capital. Our estimates have been updated to reflect the two transactions.

On net, MGM Resorts 2017 EBITDA attributable to Borgata increases by ~$90 million, $76 million from the addition of Borgata rent toMGM Growth Properties and $15 million resulting from MGMs increased stake in MGM Growth Properties.

With its high-end focus and strong database to leverage, we think MGM is well-suited to operate Borgata. Moreover, we believe that the acquisition as well as the development of a very solid product in National Harbor, Maryland has put MGM in top contention for a northern New Jersey casino license should gaming expansion happen.
