Shares ofClean Energy Fuels Corp.(NASDAQ:CLNE) surged as much as 22.7% today, before losing a little steam in afternoon trading. As of 12:20 p.m. EDT, shares were up 13.6% in very heavy trading. At this writing, more than 5 million shares have traded hands, about five times the average volume for the company’s stock.

Today’s big jump isn’t from the company’s earnings, which will be released later today after market close, but due to a surprise announcement that global oil and gas giantTotal S.A. So what

In addition to an investment that would make Total the largest shareholder of Clean Energy stock, it is also partnering with the company to launch a leasing program to help accelerate adoption of heavy-duty natural gas vehicles. As part of this program, Total would provide up to $100 million of credit to fund leases.

That much becomes clear after taking a look at fuel cell stocks Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) and Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP). The companies generated just $235 million in revenue combined last year. While that would seem to indicate that the technology has a ways to go, a closer look shows both companies are on an upward trajectory as they position to exploit decarbonization trends. It also reveals two different growth strategies.

  • [By Scott Levine]

Riding the wave of enthusiasm for alternative power, Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) has made great strides in bringing its hydrogen-power solutions to the materials handling equipment market. Thanks, in part, to deals with the world’s largest retailers like Walmart and Amazon, Plug Power has grown its top line at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21% over the past 10 years. This is no small feat considering that Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP), which is arguably Plug Power’s greatest fuel-cell competitor, has only grown its top line by an average of 8% annually over the same period.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

Fuel cell stocks tend to be more volatile than the average equity, owing at least in part to the ever-changing business models of the industry. But even that makes it difficult to explain the wild ride Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) shareholders have been on in the last year.

Shares of Six Flags Entertainment Corp.(NYSE:SIX) were up 8.8% as of 2 p.m. EDT Wednesday after the theme park operator announced better-than-expected first-quarter 2018 results.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Stocks rebounded on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing back from triple-digit losses early in the session to finish with a modest gain. Market participants were initially nervous because of the continued upward pressure on interest rates and their potential negative impact on the U.S. economy. But later in the day, confidence returned, and the steadfast market reversed course. Several individual stocks had much larger advances. Norfolk Southern (NYSE:NSC), Six Flags Entertainment (NYSE:SIX), and Intrepid Potash (NYSE:IPI) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

  • [By ]

For his “Executive Decision” segment, Cramer sat down with Jim Reid-Anderson, chairman, president and CEO of Six Flags (SIX) , the theme park operator that just posted a 74-cents-a-share loss, compared to estimates for a loss of 79 cents. Shares rallied 5.6% on the news.

Top 10 Clean Energy Stocks To Own Right Now: Unilever PLC(UL)

News coverage about Unilever (NYSE:UL) has been trending somewhat positive on Tuesday, according to Accern Sentiment Analysis. The research firm scores the sentiment of press coverage by monitoring more than 20 million news and blog sources in real time. Accern ranks coverage of publicly-traded companies on a scale of -1 to 1, with scores nearest to one being the most favorable. Unilever earned a news impact score of 0.12 on Accern’s scale. Accern also assigned news coverage about the company an impact score of 47.0118624662366 out of 100, meaning that recent press coverage is somewhat unlikely to have an impact on the company’s share price in the near future.

  • [By Isaac Pino, CPA]

Dollar Shave Club, bought by Unilever (NYSE:UL) in 2016, offers membership as low as $5. Again, the margins may be thin on the products — just like at Costco — but that’s made up by what hopefully becomes a longer, deeper relationship with the customer.

How this lid materializes is rarely explained or dwelt upon. At any rate, I do like the cliche for its flexibility as a metaphor for other disciplines — the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry, for example. Several CPG companies, including Unilever PLC (NYSE:UL), have recently found a lid on their pricing baskets: a constraint on their ability to push through price increases on goods sold through retail channels.

Top 10 Clean Energy Stocks To Own Right Now: Franco-Nevada Corporation(FNV)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Investors in Franco-Nevada (NYSE:FNV) had high hopes for the streaming and royalty company coming into 2018. After a strong 2017 that featured solid stock performance, Franco-Nevada shareholders believed that the company was making the right moves, expanding its traditional exposure to gold, silver, and other metals while also making a stronger push toward adding more oil and gas financing projects to its pipeline.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

This, however, is where streaming company Wheaton Precious Metals (NYSE:WPM)and its peers Royal Gold (NASDAQ:RGLD) and Franco-Nevada (NYSE:FNV)come into play. Streaming companies provide cash up front to miners for the right to buy gold and silver in the future at reduced rates. Often miners use the money to build new mines. Wheaton provided $625 million in cash to Barrick for the development of Pascua-Lama. That is just one of 10 development projects in which Wheaton has invested. Its portfolio also contains 17 operating mines.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (NYSE:WPM) is one of the largest silver and gold streaming companies in the world. However, over the last five years, Wheaton’s stock is down nearly 10% while peers Royal Gold, Inc. (NASDAQ:RGLD) and Franco-Nevada Corporation (NYSE:FNV) are up over 60% each. What’s going on at Wheaton, and is it worth buying what clearly looks like the industry laggard?

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

The more appropriate comparison for Royal Gold would be to streaming and royalty peers Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (NYSE:WPM) and Franco-Nevada Corporation (NYSE:FNV). The chart below lays out the vital stats for these comparisons.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Franco-Nevada Corporation’s (NYSE:FNV) stock was down roughly 11% year to date through the end of May. That’s not great, but it’s even worse when you consider that streaming and royalty peer Royal Gold Inc. (NASDAQ:RGLD) is up 9% over the same span. Even silver-heavy Wheaton Precious Metals (NYSE:WPM) has been doing better, down only about 1% (silver hasn’t performed as well gold in recent years). Why exactly is Franco-Nevada lagging its peers so badly?

stock: Oshkosh Corporation(OSK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Shanthi Rexaline]

The six companies that met the criterion are:

Oshkosh Corp (NYSE: OSK). Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX). SpartanNash Co (NASDAQ: SPTN). Suncor Energy Inc. (USA) (NYSE: SU). Washington Federal Inc. (NASDAQ: WAFD). Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS). Oshkosh

Oshkosh is a manufacturer of specialty vehicles and vehicle bodies and is based in Wisconsin. The company operates under four business segments, namely access equipment, defense, fire and emergency, and commercial.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

Oshkosh (OSK) was downgraded to neutral from buy at Bank of America/Merrill Lynch. $62 price target. The valuation is less attractive, as the stock is trading at 21x expected 2017 earnings, analysts said.

  • [By Rich Smith]

I first named Oshkosh my top stock pick back in September, when the stock cost $42 and change. Since then, the stock has gone down, and sells for $3 less. So am I supposed to dislike Oshkosh stock now?

No. To the contrary, I like it even more. (About $3 more, in fact).

You see, even in the process of picking Oshkosh back then, I warned investors: "I don’t know whether Oshkosh will be the best-performing stock in the world in the month of September, but I’ve got a strong hunch about the next six months." And that hunch remains — because the facts have not changed.

This past summer, Oshkosh was named the winner of the Pentagon’s contract to build a next-gen "Humvee" — an armored Joint Light Tactical Vehicle that will serve the U.S. military for decades to come. Oshkosh won an initial award to produce 17,000 vehicles for $6.7 billion. Ultimately, though, this is a contract that could swell to $30 billion or more for production, maintenance, and upgrade of approximately 55,000 JLTVs across all military branches.

So why hasn’t Oshkosh stock moved in response to the contract? Mainly because rival bidderLockheed Martin threw a monkey wrench into the contracts process, first protesting the JLTV award to Oshkosh, and then, when that protest was rejected, filing suit in court to try to win the contract away from its rival.

Personally, I think Lockheed Martin will lose that suit as well. After all, Lockheed’s forte is in fighter jets, while Oshkosh is the military’s premier supplier of trucks like JLTV, as well as the Army’s M-ATV vehicle (a small, all-terrain MRAP). Perhaps recognizing this, AM General, the other company that bid against Oshkosh on JLTV and lost, declined to protest the award. Lockheed took the other road, but I expect it will be a dead end for Lockheed as well.

The above image is a real picture of a full moon taken in 2012 by an astronaut on board the International Space Station. From blue water to blue sky and the sun revolving earth, there are so many illusions we encounter on a daily basis. I’d like to discuss three illusions in the financial markets that we encounter regularly but hardly take cognizance of.

Illusion 1: A 10% rate of return is always better than a 2% rate of return

Everyone loves a higher rate of return on their investments, and so we believe that if we get a 10% rate of return on an investment, we are better off than when we get a 2% rate of return. It’s a myth and doesn’t always hold good! It’s a classic case of optical illusion in financial markets.

investing in gold: Rex Energy Corporation(REXX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). We believe our Buy-rated stocks are better positioned to weather challenging oil markets.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Analysts at Jefferies initiated coverage on business process services provider Maximus Inc. (MMS) late on Thursday, giving the stock a bullish rating because it has several competitive advantages and should benefit from the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Donald van Deventer]

The latest implied forward rate forecast from Kamakura Corporation shows projected 10-year U.S. Treasury yields differing -0.07% to 0.03% from last week while fixed rate mortgage yields varied by -0.01% to 0.08%. Mortgage yields, determined by the Monday through Wednesday weekly survey of the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, lag Treasury movements simply because of the 3-day yield calculation used in the Primary Mortgage Market Survey. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield is projected to rise from 2.92% at Thursday’s close (down 0.06% from last week) to 3.374% (down 0.06% from last week) in one year. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield in ten years is forecast to reach 4.639%, 1 basis point lower than last week. The 15-year fixed rate mortgage rate is forecast to rise from the effective yield of 3.69% on Thursday (down 0.001% from last week) to 4.222% (down 0.006% from last week) in one year and 6.29% in 10 years, up 0.038% from last week. We explain the background for these calculations in the rest of this note, along with some mortgage servicing rights metrics. The forecast allows investors in exchange traded U.S. Treasury funds (TLT) (TBT), total return bond funds (BOND), municipal bonds (NUV) and exchange traded mortgage funds (REM) to assess likely total returns over the next 120 months. The New Abenomics Program

The Bank of Japan (BoJ) just launched a new phase in its monetary easing program popularly known as Abenomics. It is doing so in the hopes of shoring up economic growth. This monetary program until today had involved a targeted expansion of the monetary base at 楼80 trillion a year matched by 楼80 trillion in government bond acquisitions. There were also targeted purchases of ETFs and REITs on a smaller scale.1

The new phase unveiled today consists of three key developments. First, the BoJ will target the 10-year government bond interest rate at zero percent. Second, it will aim to overshoot its 2% inflation target so that it is truly symmetric. Third, it will drop its quantity target for the monetary base and simply make its expansion conditional on the inflation overshoot. Everything else in Abenomics remains roughly the same.

So has the Bank of Japan finally mastered its monetary conditions in a way that will spur economic growth? Or is this just another step into the quantitative quagmire of Abenomics? The short answer: do not get your hopes up. There are two reasons why this probably will not make much difference.

stock market game: Tiffany & Co.(TIF)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Peter Graham]

The Q3 2016 earnings report formid cap luxury accessories stock Tiffany & Co (NYSE: TIF) is scheduled for before the market the opens onTuesday (November 29th) as some analystswarn thatthe flagship stores close proximity to Trump Tower could adversely affect sales due to protests and enhanced security in the area. Cowen & Co. Analyst Oliver Chen has warned:

  • [By Lawrence Meyers]

The finance sector, as mentioned, can make money in many ways. The second-highest growth sector is expected to be consumer discretionary, with a 6.2% increase. When you look at earnings from luxury brands like Tiffany & Co. (TIF), and that the hotel sector continues to do very well, it suggests that those people who are in good financial shape are spending their money. Meanwhile, dollar players like Dollar Tree (DLTR) continue to perform very well, suggesting that folks with less money are spending it on cheaper items.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Cowen’s Oliver Chen and team explain why they named Tiffany (TIF) one of their best ideas for 2017:

    Getty Images

We are optimistic on Tiffany’s near- and long-term prospects. In the near-term, we have conviction on achievability of FY16 guidance and return to growth in 2017. Our view is that fundamentals will drive EPS upside–specifically, improved momentum in comp store sales through a combination of traffic and unit improvements. As we look to the longer term, our positive view is driven by: (1) modernization of product portfolio towards self-purchase in addition to Tiffany as a gifting destination; (2) category strength in areas such as bridal & engagement jewelry (29% of total revenue mix); (3) Tiffany’s opportunities to leverage its iconic long-term brand equity; (4) substantial barriers to entry with a highly evolved global supply chain, including in-house diamond operations and mining/manufacturing in Botswana; (5) management’s focus on vertical integration through systems/capital investments to advance global procurement, which is expected to gener ate longer-term cost savings; and (6) ample runway to grow e-commerce (online sales currently an est. ~6% of total revenue mix). Factors under Tiffanys control such as better inventory management and an omni-channel program and strategy are also strong positives.

Shares of Tiffany have risen 0.6% to $84.87.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Yesterday, Tiffany (TIF) soared following the release of its earnings. Cowen’s Oliver Chen and team liked what they saw enough to raise their price target but list four things that have to happen before they’d get “more constructive,” which we can only assume means raise their rating:

    Victor J. Blue/Bloomberg News

We continue to focus our attention on visibility towards 2H improvement and see potential for stock upside as investors gain further confidence on this happening. We look to get constructive on Tiffany if we see: (1) unit performance improving on more newness, particularly in <$500 price points where Tiffany has increased the number of silver jewelry SKUs by double digit percent vs. last year; 2) new marketing driving better engagement performance, which continued to see softness in 2Q; 3) on-going enhancement of in-store experience/customer engagement yielding better traffic/conversion; and 4) store comps improving on easier compares (+7% C/C in 2Q15; +1% C/C in 3Q15; and -5% C/C in 4Q15). We also see potential revenue upside to FY16 guide on retail environment improving in Asia/Hong Kong, U.S. luxury demand re-accelerating; and/or global Chinese spending regaining momentum on less F/X volatility/improving macro environment. Reit. Market Perform with new $74 PT (old $6 8) based on 17x FY17E EPS.
