Top 5 Growth Stocks To Own For 2018

Stocks fell the most since February as investors decided that maybe the market had come too far than justified by fundamentals.

Michael Nagle/Bloomberg News

The S&P 500 rose 1.2% to 2,041.91 today, its biggest decline since Feb. 23, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 174.09 points, or 1%, to 17,541.96. The Nasdaq Composite tumbled 1.5% to4848.37, its biggest drop since Feb. 8

The only news today was good news: U.S. jobless claims fell to 267,000, below forecasts for 268,000, and the 57th straight week that claims remained below 300,000.

So why is the market slipping? JPMorgan’sDubravko Lakos-Bujas blames “technical factors having already run their course.” He explains:

The market has weathered one of the most volatile first quarters in recent years. Since February lows recession fears appear to have faded, with the US market rallying 13% since then, the forward equity multiple re-rating back to its 2015 highs of ~17.5x, and the VIX back below 14. We think this recovery has been largely driven by fundamentally insensitive strategies and broad based short covering. Our high-frequency Utilization Ratio for stocks and ETFs has almost fully normalized to pre sell-off levels, implying little room left for further short covering. Positioning wise, trend-following strategies (CTAs) have covered most of their shorts and are currently close to being neutral equities. Risk parity portfolios and macro funds are long equities with their exposure approaching levels seen late last year. Long/short equity strategies exposures remain above average levels, and if anything have started to come off their mid March highs. With most of the technical factors h aving already run their course and with equity valuation at elevated levels, we believe a re-acceleration in earnings growth and weaker USD are needed to warrant a more constructive view on US equities.

Top 5 Growth Stocks To Own For 2018: Nordstrom Inc.(JWN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

    The Bad

    Bonds behaved poorly. The 10 year and long bond rose by between 3-4 basis points in yield. I bought a trading position in iShares Barclays 20+ Yr Treas.Bond ETF (TLT) in front of a possible yearend pension rebalance. Big pharma stinks up the joint, again. Spec biotech is weakening again (Portola Pharmaceuticals PTLA, ACADIA Pharmaceuticals ACAD, etc.) Retail cant get out of its way. I am long JC Penney (JCP) and have trading positions in Kohl’s (KSS) and Macy’s (M) . (Nike (NKE) , Nordstrom (JWN) , Lowe’s (LOW) are downside features).

    The Ugly

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

    * The market bent yesterday but today it stabilized. (A good showing, all things being considered–but in no way decisive going forward).
    * Gold +$5/oz.
    * Crude oil +$0.50 and the rise is taking up some energy stocks.
    * The Russell returned to the spotlight.
    * Life insurance–particularly Lincoln National (LNC) (on an upgrade). Hartford Financial Services (HIG) gets a small lift.
    * Retail returned from the depths. The standouts–L Brands (LB) , Kohl’s (KSS) , Bed Bath (BBBY) , Nordstrom (JWN) and Gap (GPS) .
    * Ag equipment–after an analyst upgrade yesterday.
    * Brokerages.
    * Homebuilders catch a bid.
    * Day one of the Masters Golf Tournament.

    Nordstrom’s (JWN) is one name we did well shorting back in May of this year, and although we made another attempt at shorting the stock for a minor loss from September to November, our net gain between the two ended up being about 16%. Not bad all things considered. However, we’re still convinced JWN is a stock that’s going to move substantially lower when it’s all said and done.

Why do you trade?

It is important to understand the true drivers behind why you trade the markets. The answer is different for everyone. We all have different circumstances, wants, wishes and desires.

Find yours.

Below are common reasons people get involved:

Entertainment Gambling Staying informed about economic and political developments Intellectual pursuit and curiosity Side income Primary income Advising friends and family Professionally managing a fund

Your reasons influence how you attack markets. For example, people managing their own wealth might prioritize account growth over shallow drawdowns, whereas the individual looking to run money professionally will need to focus on risk control. Then you have the gamblers who will undboudtedely gravitate towards penny stocks and out-of-the-money options.

Your reasons for trading also greatly influence the amount of time and energy you will need to commit to the markets. Simply placing trades and having fun without regard to your profits and losses will take a few minutes a week. On the other hand, launching a fund will take all your time and energy just like any other business startup.

Hot Growth Stocks To Invest In 2018

As Amazon invests heavily across the globe, India is one of the key growth countries for the company, with e-commerce in the region at a nascent stage and a huge potential for growth. However, economic policies in the country can impact this growth for Amazon. In a sudden and unprecedented move, on November 8, 2016, the Indian government announced that high value currency notes (Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000) will no longer be legal tender, eliminating nearly 86% of the currency in circulation, creating a huge cash crunch in the economy. In a country where nearly 90% of transactions are carried out in cash, a bold move to transform the region into a “cashless” economy has created chaos. The move is intended both to reduce untaxed “black” money and rampant corruption in the country, and to bring more accountability in cash-based informal industries.

Experts believe that demonetization could impact the country’s economic growth significantly in the short term. Ambit Capital, a reputed research company in India, has revised its FY18 GDP growth estimate to 5.8% as opposed to the 7.3% figure earlier. The cash crunch has impacted business of several industries and can have a significant impact on the “Cash on Delivery” model of e-commerce companies in India. About 70% of online shoppers in India, including those on Amazon’s platform, opt for cash while buying a product. Cash payments are more frequent for high value products where the unaccounted “black” money is spent on luxuries. While online grocery companies have seen a surge in revenues with the demonetization move, as consumers look to buy essential commodities through digital payments, gross merchandize value of other high value commodities is likely to be impacted negatively. According to Forrester Research, the cash crunch will bring the cash on delivery share of e-commerce sales down significantly and increase the online payments.

Hot Growth Stocks To Invest In 2018: Nordstrom Inc.(JWN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

    By now, we all know retailers are facing a tough time. More and more, people are choosing to shop online, putting sales under pressure and leaving many with too many stores. Some department stores have begun to acknowledge the problems–but will they be able to adjust quickly enough in a rapidly changing landscape? Credit Suisse analyst Christian Bussand team believe this process is “well under way” but that didn’t stop them from downgrading Kohl’s (KSS) and J.C. Penney (JCP), even as they upgraded Nordstrom (JWN) and Burlington Stores(BURL). They explain why:

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

    After several years of being a Wall Street darling, Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN) has fallen out of favor since 2015 as it has been hit by some of the same negative trends that have hurt the department store sector as a whole.

  • [By Micheal Brown]

    Nordstrom (JWN) is a high end department store that is well known in the United States of America. It was founded by John W. Nordstrom and Carl F. Wallin in the year 1901. It began as a shoe retail store but has expanded over the years to retailing clothing’s, fragrances, accessories, handbags, jewelry and cosmetics.

    In the first quarter of this year, Nordstrom had amazing miss and ugly guidance reduction; its stock even plunged low about 30% in the last month. It was reported in the first quarter of the year that Nordstrom had earnings of 26 cents per share versus forecasts for 46 cents per share. Its sales were totaled to be $3.19 billion compared to the $3.28 billion which had earlier been estimated. Comparable-store sales fell 1.7%. For the remainder of the year, Nordstrom now foresees earnings of about $2.50 to $2.70 cents a share, down from $3.10 to $3.65 a share previously.

     We welcome host of Fox Business Network’s Making Money with Charles Payne to this year’s contest. When he’s not on air, the rags-to-riches financial guru is editing his free weekly newsletter, Charles Payne’s Smart Talk, as well as his new newsletter, Charles Payne’sSmart Investing, which allows individuals insights into picks that were formerly only available to institutions.

    Payne is going with the owner, operator and franchiser of a wildly popular sports and wings bar for this year’s pick: Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD).

    With commodities prices in the dumps, BWLD stands to benefit as Americans have more cash lining their pockets thanks to lower gas prices. That’s cash, Charles reasons, that Buffalo Wild Wings will be able to claim a chunk of. Not to mention the fact that if chicken prices remain subdued, it’ll mean a beefier bottom line.

Top 10 Growth Stocks To Buy For 2018: Nordstrom Inc.(JWN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Rich Duprey]

    An increasing number of retailers have announced their intention to drop Ivanka Trump’s merchandise line. From Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN) and Belk to Neiman-Marcus and Burlington, there’s a growing movement for retailers to distance themselves from the Trump brand.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    The retail industry has gone through tough times lately, and things have been especially difficult for high-end retailers like Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN). As shoppers become more comfortable with online shopping, department stores with substantial brick-and-mortar assets have had to adapt to changes in consumer behavior and meet them on their own terms, and that’s been a difficult proposition for a company that prides itself on one-on-one customer service in the store setting.
