PNC Financial Services (PNC) ended the week on a down note, despite better-than-expected first-quarter earnings.

PNC said it earned $1.96 per share on revenue that climbed6% to $3.88 billion. Analysts were looking for earnings per share of $1.83 on $3.8 billion of revenue.

A couple of analysts notes about the quarter are trickling in.

Evercore ISI’s John Pancari reitearted an Outperform rating and $139 price target:

We came away from 1Q17 results with greater confidence in our constructive view on the shares, particularly as balance sheet growth strengthens, NIM upside materializes, operative leverage improves, and credit remains contained.

Raymond James’s Michael Rose reiterated a Market Perform rating on the stock:

Excluding a positive valuation adjustment, recognition of deferred issuance costs related to the redemption of all REIT preferred securities on March 15, and fair value adjustments related to Visa Class B shares, operating EPS was also $1.96. Stronger than forecast revenue (both net interest income and fee revenue), a lower than forecast loan loss provision, and a lower than modeled tax rate more than offset higher noninterest expenses versus our model. Excluding losses on the sales of securities and the impact of mortgage servicing rights (MSR) hedging activity, we peg core EPS at $1.95.

In addition, the company announced that it has agreed to acquire a steel plant in Brazil from ThyssenKrupp (NASDAQOTH:TYEKF) for $1.3 billion. While that plant has had its share of problems in the past, Ternium is getting it for a good value, and it has upside potential. The company paid slightly less than five times EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) for the facility. As the following chart shows, that’s below the value that steel-company stocks trade for these days:

Top 10 Safest Stocks To Own Right Now: iShares Mortgage Real Estate Capped (REM)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Donald van Deventer]

The latest implied forward rate forecast from Kamakura Corporation shows projected 10-year U.S. Treasury yields differing -0.07% to 0.03% from last week while fixed rate mortgage yields varied by -0.01% to 0.08%. Mortgage yields, determined by the Monday through Wednesday weekly survey of the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, lag Treasury movements simply because of the 3-day yield calculation used in the Primary Mortgage Market Survey. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield is projected to rise from 2.92% at Thursday’s close (down 0.06% from last week) to 3.374% (down 0.06% from last week) in one year. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield in ten years is forecast to reach 4.639%, 1 basis point lower than last week. The 15-year fixed rate mortgage rate is forecast to rise from the effective yield of 3.69% on Thursday (down 0.001% from last week) to 4.222% (down 0.006% from last week) in one year and 6.29% in 10 years, up 0.038% from last week. We explain the background for these calculations in the rest of this note, along with some mortgage servicing rights metrics. The forecast allows investors in exchange traded U.S. Treasury funds (TLT) (TBT), total return bond funds (BOND), municipal bonds (NUV) and exchange traded mortgage funds (REM) to assess likely total returns over the next 120 months. Treasury-related exchange traded funds affected by the forward rates include:

Hot Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now

In my Trader column on Dec.3, I argued for more upside in Deere (DE), despite the fact that it had gained more than 30% on the year. Part of the argument was technical–Deere had finally broken out of a trading range that had been in place for five years–but I also noted that the agricultural equipment maker had been able to grow earnings despite continued sluggish demand for farm equipment. Today, Baird’s Mircea Dobre and Joseph Grabowski make a similar argument as they name Deere an Idea for 2017:

Getty Images

Deere has upside even after a strong 4Q16 where the real surprise was strong Ag margin rather than confirmation that a turn in the Ag cycle is imminent. This is where the opportunity lies: as investors find additional evidence supporting a 2017 North American ag bottom the multiple can continue expanding towards the historical peak of 25x baked in our target. For perspective, Caterpillar (CAT) is trading >30x on the premise of a bottom in several cyclical end markets (mining, infrastructure, oil & gas).

Hot Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now: Infinera Corporation(INFN)

Investing in the tech sector can be tricky. Competition tends to be fierce, which makes it difficult to stay one step ahead. Two companies that have a strong history of maintaining their edge are Skyworks Solutions(NASDAQ:SWKS)and Infinera(NASDAQ:INFN). Both of these businesses have been taking market share in their industries for years, which is impressive. But which of these two tech companies is the better investment today? Let’s review the bull thesis for each company so we can make an informed decision.

  • [By Tracey Ryniec]

Infinera isn’t in a glamorous part of the technology business, as it provides fiber optic connection gear, but as companies like Amazon and Facebook need and use ever more data, it’s Infinera which paves the way. Earnings are expected to grow 31% in 2016.

  • [By Billy Duberstein]

What a year 2016 was for Infinera (NASDAQ:INFN) shareholders. The stock plunged over 50% last year, as its multiyear run of accelerating 20%-30% growth rates ground to a halt. The story changed from that of a high-growth technology company riding the secular trend of exploding data and bandwidth needs to one of stagnating revenues, profits turning to losses, increased competition, and end customers pausing investments in optical networks.

Top 5 Performing Stocks To Watch For 2017

KBW’s Meyer Shields and team took a look at Warren Buffett’s portfolio at Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) and contend that Buffett’s underperforming the S&P 500:

Reuters

We estimate Berkshire’s QTD equity portfolio performance at +2.4%, about 190 bps below the S&P 500s +4.3% performance. We reiterate our Market Perform rating, since we think Berkshire’s current valuation fully balances its strong cash flow prospects against its unique senior management succession risk.

Berkshire’s QTD returns primarily reflected outperformance in technology and financials (International Business Machines (IBM), Moody’s (MCO), U.S. Bancorp (USB), and American Express (AXP)), partly offset by underperformance within energy, healthcare, and consumer-nondurables (Phillips 66 (PSX), Coca-Cola (KO), and DaVita HealthCare Partners (DVA)).

Top 5 Performing Stocks To Watch For 2017: HP Inc.(HPQ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Brian Mathews]

Originally part of the Hewlett-Packard giant, HP Inc. (NYSE: HPQ) split into two companies: HP Inc. and HP Enterprises. HP Inc. is the company that sells personal computers and printers. Although the demand for PCs has been sluggish over the last year, analysts expect sales to stabilize. However, the biggest growth factor for HPQ is that its split from HP Enterprises has increased its financial flexibility to pursue higher ROI projects that should drive further innovation. Another potential blockbuster opportunity for HPQ is its penetration into the 3D printing market. Although this industry is still in the pioneering stages, HPQ could use this as an opportunity to stake market share. With increased financial flexibility after the breakup, the projection for HPQ is $16 a share in the upcoming year.

For example, remember when Jim Cramer, famed host of CNBC’s “Mad Money,” urged viewers to get out of Hewlett Packard Inc. (NYSE: HPQ) stock on Nov. 20, 2012, citing bad corporate culture and other issues?

Adobe Postcript and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) Printer Command Language, or PCL, are the leading industry standards for printing. Monotype Imaging has a Universal Font Scaling Technology that makes OEMs printer devices compatible with the leading industry printing standards. Additionally, this technology also allows compatibility with PDF, XHTML, and XPS printing languages. Monotype Imaging also supports standard page description language, or PDL. This technological offering is the differentiating factor, allowing OEMs to license different combinations of PDLs and supported file formats such as PostScript 3, PDF, XPS, and PCL 5 and PCL 6. Having this kind of technology allowed Monotype Imaging to strike a deal with Toshiba TEC in the OEM segment in the previous quarter. Toshiba’s e-studio multi-function printers now integrate Monotype Imaging font and technologies. It released these printers in China, Europe, and the Americas, and they include Monotype Imaging’s fonts, printer drivers, and PCL 6 PDL.

Trump’s immigration policy could hurt U.S. farmers Donald Trump made clear Monday that he’s focused on immigrant visa programs — and immigration advocates and tech leaders are paying close attention.

In a short video address this week, Trump listed the issue as a priority for his first 100 days in office: He said he will “direct the Department of Labor to investigate all abuses of visa programs that undercut the American worker.”

Vivek Wadhwa, a distinguished fellow at Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Engineering, said that he was “encouraged” by what Trump didn’t mention. “What he didn’t say was that he was going to close the door to skilled immigrants,” he told CNNMoney.

historical stock prices: LaSalle Hotel Properties(LHO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Marshall Hargrave]

The other key benefit for Strategic is that it enjoys industry-leading earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) per available room. For 2012, Strategic generated $81 per room of EBITDA. Compare this to top comps LaSalle Hotel (NYSE: LHO) at $74 per room and Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE: PEB) at $71. The reason for this is that Strategic is much less reliant than its peers on rooms, with much greater exposure to food and beverages. Strategic earns 53% of its revenue from rooms, while its peers get around 66% of revenues from rooms.

Wendy Maeda/The Boston Globe via Getty Images NEW YORK — Walgreen is moving 120,000 employees to a private health insurance exchange from coverage provided directly from carriers, the company will announce Wednesday. The pharmacy chain will join 17 other large employers on the Aon Hewitt Corporate Health Exchange as part of a growing movement to offer employees fixed dollar amounts to purchase their own plans on such exchanges. The end-cost to employees depends on the plan chosen, but they typically get more options than under traditional arrangements. Private exchanges mimic the coverage mandated as part of the Affordable Care Act. Enrollment in the public exchanges starts Oct. 1. “What happens to employer contributions over time? Will they put in as much as they put in the past? These are unanswered questions but potential negatives,” says Paul Fronstin, a senior research associate with the Employee Benefit Research Institute. The benefit to Walgreen and other employers is unknown at this point, as their cost-savings aren’t clear. Of the 180,000 Walgreen (WAG) employees eligible for health care insurance, 120,000 opted for coverage for themselves and 40,000 family members. Another 60,000 employees, many of them working part-time, weren’t eligible for health insurance. Aon Hewitt (AON) says other participants in its program include retailer Sears Holding (SHLD) and Darden Restaurants (DRI). These new additions raise enrollment to 330,000 from 100,000 last year, and Aon Hewitt estimates enrollment will jump to 600,000 next year, a fivefold increase from 2012. By 2017, nearly 20 percent of employees nationwide could get their health insurance through a private exchange, according to Accenture Research (ACN). A recent report by the National Business Group on Health said that 30 percent of large employers are considering moving active employees to exchanges by 2015. Other major providers of private exchanges include Mercer, a division of Marsh & Mc

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Shauna O’Brien]

Nomura Securities reported that it has upgraded financial services company Barclays PLC (BCS) to “Buy.”

The firm has lifted its rating on BCS two notches from “Reduce” to “Buy.” Normura has also raised its price target from 260p to 340p.

Analyst Chintan Joshi commented: “With growth in the developed world likely to continue well into the start of next year, stocks geared to capital markets should see macroeconomic support. Structural issues are an industry feature and Barclays could still come out better relative to peers compared with its current position. We expect 2015 ROTE of c12% and believe Barclays should be valued at a 2014E P/TB of 1x as we look for 1Q14 momentum. We set our ex-rights target price at 340p (cum rights it would be 380p), which puts the stock at a 2015E P/E of 6.4x, which is hardly demanding. Barclays is now our top pick among its IB and UK peers and a preferred way to gain exposure to the current risk rally. We upgrade our rating on Barclays to Buy from Reduce. We believe investors waiting for the infamous J curve may find that it is fairly muted for Barclays on the downside.”

Barclays shares were up 27 cents, or 1.40%, during pre-market trading Monday. The stock is up 11% YTD.
