Hot Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (SSNLF)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Juniper Research estimates Apple Pay had 45 million users in 2016 and forecasts it to have 86 million by the end of 2017 and 60% of total users from Apple Pay, Samsung (OTC:SSNLF) Pay, and Android Pay. Juniper also expects the trio to combine for over 500 million users by 2021. If Apple can maintain its 60% market share that would imply 300 million users.

One of the big takeaways for investors at the end of 2016 was that Virtual Reality (VR) headsets such as Oculus Rift by Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) didn’t do that well. It’s difficult to come by hard numbers, since the makers of these headsets won’t release sales figures. It’s clear that the best performing VR headset was the Samsung (OTC:SSNLF) Gear VR, which uses a Samsung smartphone as the key display/computing element.

Like I said in a previous article (please consider: Buy Fitbit: The Dust Has Settled), I do not expect FIT to even come close to sell as many smartwatches as Apple. In fact probably not even as many as Samsung (OTC:SSNLF). But the issue is that it doesn’t need to sell that many.

About Venmo. I don’t think it’s the game changer that many in the PayPal investment community think it is. It’s growing for sure but for me it is yet unproven and is the one point where Apple Pay (NASDAQ:AAPL), Samsung Pay (OTC:SSNLF) and potentially Square (NYSE: SQ) can actually land a punch. $9.4 billion in transaction volume last quarter and making it available in around two million U.S. retailers are signs of a growing business, but whether it will be used for retail purchases by its user base remains to be seen. I could be surprised on the upside in the coming 3-6 quarters. But as long as the company isn’t revealing the number of its users I won’t be holding my breath and including this in the factors that can contribute to sustained growth.

The rate of change in the semiconductor industry is very rapid as implied by the Moore’s law. Hence, it is a very capital-intensive and research-driven industry. The cost of opening a new fab (semiconductor fabrication plant) would cost billions of dollars and roughly 10% of sales for an integrated semiconductor company like Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) and Samsung (OTC:SSNLF) is plowed back into R&D, i.e., billions of dollars annually. Hence, a threat from a new entrant is highly unlikely in the semiconductor industry, at least as of now.
